Girl with a Pearl Earring #6
This is the beginning of the last portion of the painting, where colour begins to be applied. The coat and blue parts of the turban have been worked up in opaque paint. Two glazes have been applied to the face; the first being a very pale creamy colour made up of flake white, rose madder and cadmium yellow light. The next glaze was done in rose madder and applied to give the face a pinker hue. I used Winsor & Newton Fine Detail Liquin to apply the glazes. Note the drip on the upper forehead and background edge, where the glaze pooled. The same mix was used to glaze over the turban adding a little more madder, and it turned the colour to an iris blue. My photo is more ultramarine, and I can't quite get the subtle red tone that I have in the original. Today, the work will be to build up the darker areas on the face, and to hopefully finish the white/light parts of the turban.
