Girl with a Pearl Earring #3
The 2nd layer is laying-in and building up the forms with raw umber mixed with a little burnt umber, a small amount of turpenoid and some medium. The forms were laid in with a small bright brush; this is my favorite to work with, as it allows me to lay in my strokes in a more controlled manner. If they need softening, I work at the edges with a rag. This is about 5 hours work. The next step or 3rd layer, is to build up the mass tones with a mix made of burnt umber, using a larger softer brush. Unfortunately , I don't have an image of this; in the next image, I've started the 4th layer or the 'dead' layer, as I was generally satisfied with what I had here, and time was running out.
